Functional Filters

I've been working on a project where I realized that I wanted to call methods on Python objects *with arguments* from within a Django template. As a silly example, let's say your application maintains users and "permissions" that have been granted to them. Say that permissions are open-ended, and new ones are getting defined on a regular basis. Your `User` class has a `check_permission(p)` method that return `True` if the user has been granted the permission `p`. You want to present all the users in a table, with one row per user. You want to each permission to be presented as a column in the table. A checkmark will appear in cells where a user has been granted a particular permission. Normally, in order to achieve this, you'd need to cons up some sort of list-of-dicts structure in Python and pass that as a context argument. Ugh! Here's how you'd use the `method`, `with`, and `call` filters to invoke the `check_permission` method from within your template. (Assume that you've provided `users` and `permissions` as context variables, with a list of user and permission objects, respectively.) <table> <tr> <th></th> {% for p in permissions %} <th>{{ p.name }}</th> {% endfor %} </tr> {% for u in users %} <tr> <td>{{ u.name }}</td> {% for p in permissions %} <td> {% if user|method:"check_permission"|with:p|call" %}X{% endif %} </td> {% endfor %} </tr> {% endfor %} </table> The `call_with` method is a shortcut for single-argument invocation; for example, we could have re-written the above as {% if user|method:"check_permission"|call_with:p %}...{% endif %} Anyway, this has been useful for me. Hope it's helpful for others! --chris P.S., tip o' the cap to Terry Weissman for helping me polish the rough edges!

encode_mailto

This is a django filter which will create an html mailto link when you use the syntax: {{ "[email protected]"|encode_mailto:"Name" }} Results in: <a href="mailto:[email protected]">Name</a> Except everything is encoded as html digits. The encoding is a string of html hex and decimal entities generated randomly. If you simply want a string encoding use: {{ "name"|encode_string }} This was inspired by John Gruber's [Markdown](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax#autolink) project

filter dates to user profile's timezone

I have users in many timezones and I let them set their preferred display timezone in their user profile as a string (validated aginst the pytz valid timezones). This is a filter that takes a datetime as input and as an argument the user to figure out the timezone from. It requires that there is a user profile model with a 'timezone' field. If a specific user does not have a user profile we fall back on the settings.TIME_ZONE. If the datetime is naieve then we again fallback on the settings.TIME_ZONE. It requires the 'pytz' module: [http://pytz.sourceforge.net/](http://pytz.sourceforge.net/) Use: `{{ post.created|user_tz:user|date:"D, M j, Y H:i" }}` The example is assuming a context in which the 'user' variable refers to a User object.

Using the built-in slugify filter outside a template

This is just a very short (and mostly useless on it's own) example of how the built in slugify filter can be used in a Python script to generate slugs. It was pulled from a script I've written to pull in items from Upcoming.org's API. I post it because "sunturi" posted [Snippet #29](http://www.djangosnippets.org/snippets/29/), which duplicates the functionality of the built-in slugify filter. In the comments of that snippet, santuri (and others) seem to believe that template filters can only be used within templates. This is incorrect, and I think it's important people understand they can be used elsewhere. sunturi's snippet does remove prepositions from values before slugifying them, so if you need that, his code will work work. But if all you need is slugification, the built-in slugify filter will work fine -- in a Python script, as well as in a template.

aggregate filter

Makes it possible to add a filtering condition directly after the aggregate function (or possible, `aggregate(expression) WITHIN GROUP (ordering clause)`. This is mostly useful if the annotation has two or more expressions, so it's possible to compare the result with and without the applied filter; it's more compact than using `Case`. It's suggested to add `values` to the queryset to get a proper group by. Usage example: `books = Book.objects.values('publisher__name').annotate( count=Count('*'), filtercount=Filter(expression=Count('publisher__name'), condition=Q(rating__gte=5)) ) ` Supported on Postgresql 9.4+. Possible other third-party backends.

Filter by taggit tags in the admin (Django 1.4)

A *SimpleListFilter* derived class that can be used to filter by taggit tags in the admin. To use, simply add this class to the *list_filter* attribute of your ModelAdmin class. Ex.: class ItemAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): list_display = ('name', 'unit', 'amount') list_filter = ('unit', TaggitListFilter) Based in [ModelAdmin.list_filter documentation](https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/admin/#django.contrib.admin.ModelAdmin.list_filter).

Filtering foreignkey fields in django admin

Sometimes you need to filter foreignkey choices in admin interface, to objects created by user or meeting some other condition. In django 1.0 there is no formfield_for_foreignkey method in ModelAdmin class so we have to make a workaround. Here is the solution I have found to be the easiest for me.

URL based breadcrumbs

This is a simple URL based breadcrumb filter I'm using on a site I'm currently building. To use it, just throw the code into template-tag file, and simply pass the current url in a page template like so {{ request.get_full_path|breadcrumbs }} As an example of how to style it, wrap it in a unordered list with an id of breadcrumb, and then in your styles use #breadcrumb li { display: inline; }. On a contact form for a site user, this will produce something along the lines of you are here : [home](/) » [users](/users/) » [username](/username/) » contact form Hopefully someone may find it useful.

Breadcrumbs for flatpages

Custom template filter to generate a breadcrumb trail for a flatpage. Say you have a series of flatpages with URLs like /trunk/branch/leaf/ etc. This filter looks at the URL of a given flatpage, figures out which of the leftwards text chunks correspond to other flatpages, and generates a string of anchored HTML. Usage: {% load make_breadcrumb_trail %} {{ flatpage.url|crumbs:flatpage.title }}
