Model Forms: Clean unique field

Often I want fields in my models to be unique - Django's `unique` works too late in model form validation and will throw an exception unless you check for it by hand. This is a bit of code that cleans up the boiler plate of checking if different fields are unique. Set `exclude_initial` to `False` if you want to raise an error if the unique field cannot be set to whatever value the instance had before. **Update** Thanks fnl for rightly pointing out that Django's `unique=True` does check for this - just make sure to pass `instance=obj` when you're initializing your forms. _HOWEVER_ a problem you'll typically run into with this is though you want a field to unique, you also want multiple entries to be able to be `blank`. This can help you!

Class ModelInfo for show object info

This class works in compatibility with a ModelForm, but instead of show a form, it shows the field values. The Meta class attributes can be used to customize fields to show, to be excluded, to divide by sections, to urlize text fields, etc. **Example 1:** class InfoSingleCertificate(ModelInfo): class Meta: model = SingleCertificate sections = ( (None, ('vessel','description','document','comments','status',)), ('Issue', ('issue_date','issue_authority','issue_location',)), ) **Example 2:** class InfoSingleCertificate(ModelInfo): class Meta: model = SingleCertificate fields = ('vessel','description','document','comments','status', 'issue_date','issue_authority','issue_location',) **How to use:** Just save this snippet as a file in your project, import to your views.py module (or a new module named "info.py") and create classes following seemed sytax you use for ModelForms.

  • forms
  • model
  • display
  • modelforms

Automatic CRUD urls from your models...

Just extends your models from this One... is abstract so, it will not generate a table. Now, in your urls.py do this: from django.conf.urls.defaults import * from animals.models import Dog, Cat, Bird urlpatterns = patterns('animals.views', url(r'^$', 'index', {},Dog._meta.app_label), ) dog=Dog() cat=Cat() bird=Bird() urlpatterns+=dog.build_generic_CRUD_urls(Dog) urlpatterns+=cat.build_generic_CRUD_urls(Cat) urlpatterns+=bird.build_generic_CRUD_urls(Bird) then you can create the templates, and get the urls like this: {{ object.get_absolute_url }} View {{ object.get_update_url }} Edit {{ object.get_delete_url }} Delete {{ dummy_object.get_create_url }} Create dummy_object is a quick and dirty solution until I find some better... With all these you can create 54 functional and low detail CRUDS in one hour. :D Enjoy!

Encryption Fields

This provides some basic cryptographic fields using pyCrypto. All encryption/decription is done transparently and defaults to use AES. Example usage: class DefferredJunk(models.Model): semi_secret = EncryptedCharField(max_length=255)

keeping Model and Field History (everywhere)

Usage: class MyModel(ModelWithHistory): class History: model = True # save model changes into admin's LogEntry table fields = ('f1', 'f2') # save these fields history to AttributeLogEntry table f1 = CharField(max_length=100) f2 = IntegerField() for threadlocals, see http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/CookBookThreadlocalsAndUser Aware! Not thoroughly tested yet. May cause problems with loading fixtures.

Model Mixin to Save Only Changed Fields

**[Improved and Released as Save The Change.](https://github.com/karanlyons/django-save-the-change)** Django 1.5 added the `update_fields` `kwarg` to `Model.save()`, which allows the developer to specify that only certain fields should actually be committed to the database. However, Django provides no way to automatically commit only changed fields if they're not specified. This mixin keeps track of which fields have changed from their value in the database, and automatically applies `update_fields` to update only those fields.

Instance partial update

If you're like me, you've got a models with a lot of fields/foreignkeys and often only want to edit a portion of the model in a form. Add this method to your custom form class and use it in place of the save() method.

DRY with common model fields

If you have many models that all share the same fields, this might be an option. Please note that order matters: Your model need to inherit from TimestampedModelBase first, and models.Model second. The fields are added directly to each model, e.g. while they will be duplicated on the database level, you only have to define them once in your python code. Not sure if there is a way to automate the call to TimestampedModelInit(). Tested with trunk rev. 5699. There is probably a slight chance that future revisions might break this.

Mini issue tracker

Described more fully on [my blog](http://e-scribe.com/news/230), but the gist is: this model becomes a sort of mini-app in your admin, allowing you to record and track issues related to your other applications. Sorting still needs some work. UPDATED 2007-03-14: Fixed repeat in Admin.list_display (thanks, burly!); added Admin.list_filter; changed app list (why did I call that `PROJECTS`, anyway?) to omit "django.*" apps

Enumeration field

These three classes allows you to use enumerations (choices) in more natural model-like style. You haven't to use any magic numbers to set/get field value. And if you would like to make your enumeration a full-fledged django-model, migration should be easy. Note, that you can subclass Item to add some context-specific attributes to it, such as `get_absolute_url()` method for instance. Examples are provided in the form of `doctest` in the second half of the snippet.

autogenerated UUID model field

Provides UUIDField for your models. This version creates very short UUID represenation (21 chars) when the record is added eg. in admin. Generated ids are safe to be used in URLs. You can put represent it in admin as 'readonly_fields=("uuid",)'
