Fuzzy Time of Day

This filter will display the time as word(s) indicating roughly the time of day ("Morning", "Afternoon", "Evening", etc). For example, the following template snippet: Posted in the {{ post.date|fuzzy_time }} of {{ post.date|date:"F j, Y"} }}. will result in the following (assuming `post.date == datetime.datetime(2007, 6, 13, 20, 57, 55, 765000)`): Posted in the evening of June 13, 2007. The terms used and breakpoints (hours only) can be rather arbitrary so you may want to adjust them to your liking. See the docs for [bisect][] for help in understanding the code. Just remember you should have one less breakpoint than periods and the first breakpoint falls at the end of the first period. The idea was inspired by [Dunstan Orchard][1], although the code is *very* different (php case statement). He uses quite a bit more periods in a day, so you might want to take a look. linebreaksli template filter

This template filter will split a string of text on newlines and return a string of <li></li>s with a newline before every line. This is handy for taking a paragraph of text and making an <ol> or <ul> from its lines. Don't forget to register your filter with the template library first or the filter won't work.

Automatic Paragraphs

I just converted the autop filter from Drupal (which is itself based on a Wordpress filter) from PHP to Python. I had to change the format of the regular expressions a bit and make them raw strings, but otherwise the function is unchanged. It should work exactly like the original function.

simple string formatting filter

I use this filter quite a bit to keep my templates less cluttered. Instead of: {%if some_variable%}, {{some_variable}}{%endif%} I can write: {{some_variable|format:", %s"}} A common one I use is: {{some_variable|format:"<p>%s</p>"}}

Wiki-like markup for sub templates

I wanted to have the possibility to use a wiki-like markup style in my flatpages for various purposes (embedding images, quoting, etc.) After a few dead ends I came up with this, which is quite nice I think. > It basically takes a named tag, loads the corresponding template, passes in all arguments, renders the template and replaces the named tag with the result. *The markup looks like this:* > [[example:value to pass|option1=somevalue option2=values can have spaces too! without having to put them in quotes option3=some other value]] *This results in:* * Filter tries to load wiki/wiki_example.html * If it is loaded, it passes an WikiElement containing the value and the options to the template, renders it and replaces the tag with the rendered template *In the "wiki/wiki_example.html" template you can use it like this:* {{param.value}} {{param.opts.option1}} Or loop over param.opts.iteritems.

Basic logic filters

Usage: {% if item|IN:list %} The item is in the list. {% endif %} {% if customer.age|LE:18 %} Go play out here. {% endif %} {% if product.price|add:delivery_cost|GT:balance %} Insufficient funds. {% endif %} You've got the idea. Special thanks to [guychi](http://www.djangosnippets.org/snippets/379/).

Link filter

Almost too dumb to be worth posting but its saved me a lot of typing. Instead of: <div> <a href="{{ object.get_absolute_url }} class="object-icon">{{ object }}</a> </div> just put: <div>{{ object|link }}</div>

Breadcrumbs for flatpages

Custom template filter to generate a breadcrumb trail for a flatpage. Say you have a series of flatpages with URLs like /trunk/branch/leaf/ etc. This filter looks at the URL of a given flatpage, figures out which of the leftwards text chunks correspond to other flatpages, and generates a string of anchored HTML. Usage: {% load make_breadcrumb_trail %} {{ flatpage.url|crumbs:flatpage.title }}

Hyperlink list filter

This is a simple filter that takes an object list and returns a comma-separated list of hyperlinks. I use it to display the list of tags in my blog entries. The function assumes the object has a `get_absolute_url()` method that returns the URL. In your template, write `{{ obj_list|hyperlink_list:"slug" }}` where `obj_list` is your object list and `"slug"` is the object's attribute that returns the link text.
