This function emulates the file upload behaviour of django's admin, but can be used in any view. It takes a list of POST keys that represent uploaded files, and saves the files into a date-formatted directory in the same manner as a `FileField`'s `upload_to` argument.
There's no direct way to save the contents of a URL to a Django File field: you're required to use a File instance but those can only safely wrap normal files, not the file-like object returned by urllib2.urlopen. Several examples online use urllib.urlretrieve() which creates a temporary file but performs no error handling without writing a ton of hackish code. This demonstrates how to create a NamedTemporaryFile, fill it with the URL contents and save it, all using APIs which raise exceptions on errors.
Sometimes it is desirable to use values like the primary key when naming `FileField` and `ImageField` files, but such values are only available after saving the model instance. This abstract class implements a two-phase save in order to make this case easy. See the example in the docstring. Another solution would be to write a `save()` that requires `upload_to` to be a callable that checks for `instance.pk`, then calls it again after saving. However, this would require more work from the developer for simple cases.
This code runs well on Django 1.4 also with the Admin panel. It's important to get the storage and the path before delete the model or the latter will persist void also if deleted.
Rather simple usage, modelforms/in the admin: class CustomAdminForm(forms.ModelForm): class Meta: model = Something widgets = { 'image': URLFileInput(default_exts=[".png", ".gif", ".jpg"]), } class SomethingAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): form = CustomAdminForm admin.site.register(Something, SomethingAdmin) Basically, this will pull the image from the URL instead of only pulling it from your harddrive for upload. Also accepts optional default_exts argument which limits the file types. Defaults to images.
Allows Amazon S3 storage aware file fields to be dropped in a model. Requires the boto library.
The widget for FileField and ImageField has a problem: it doesn't supports clear its value and it doesn't delete the old file when you replace it for a new one. This is a solution for this. It is just for Admin, but you can make changes to be compatible with common forms. The jQuery code will put an **<input type="checkbox">** tag next to every **<input type="file">** and user can check it to clear the field value. When a user just replace the current file for a new one, the old file will be deleted.
A simple way to handle file validation by checking for a proper content_type and by making sure that the file does not go over its limit upload size limit. In the example I am checking to make sure the file is an image or a video file then I check to make sure that the file is below the max upload limit. if conditions are not met, then a validation error is raised
A simple FileField with a addition file extension whitelist. Raised ValidationError("Not allowed filetype!") if a filename contains a extension witch is not in the whitelist.
